It's incredibly important for you, as the client, to understand the different techniques and know which style of brow will be best for you.. Microblading and Nano Brows, while both considered "permanent makeup" are the same style of brow, but are NOT the same technique.
Microblading (or simply “blading”) uses a tool to manually cut slices to implant pigment in the skin. It’s not recommended for clients who have oily skin, mature skin (40+ years), combination skin, sun-damaged skin, sensitive skin, or very vascular skin, which is the majority of clients. Due to the cutting and scarring it causes, the often poor healed results, and very poor long-term results, I would never recommend Microblading.
The Nano Brow technique uses a single needle and a tattoo machine to poke the skin, rather than cut the skin. Think of your skin like fabric. You can poke a hole in your shirt (like wearing a pin or a name tag), and your shirt is fine. But if you take a blade and cut a hole in your shirt, you just ruined your shirt!
Because there is no disruption in the integrity of the skin with tattooing, it's suitable for all skin types. It's also much less painful, the healed results are much better, and the long-term healed results (which are the most important!) are much better as well.
Blading vs. Tattooing
If they called it Micro-cutting,
no one would do it!
Microblading ("blading") cuts the skin and causes bleeding. Even with anesthetic, it's very painful, and because the integrity of the skin is broken, it must heal by creating scar tissue. Tattooing rarely causes any bleeding, isn't painful for clients, and there is no risk of scarring when done correctly..
Aside from pain, bleeding, and scar tissue, there are two other main esthetic issues clients experiences with Microblading. The first is strokes blurring together, and the second is pigment color change.
Because the skin is cut during the Microbladng process, it has to repair itself, often resulting in the strokes (which typically look good immediately after the procedure) blurring together. during the healing process.
Nano Brows, in comparison, allows the strokes to heal soft yet still defined.
The second main esthetic issue with the technique of Microblading is it's very easy for the artist to cut too deep into the skin, causing the ink to implant too deep into dermal layer. This results in pigment typically changing color, most often ashy/grey, opposed to staying the target color of golden blonde, taupe, brown, etc. It also prevents the pigment from fading properly overtime, and instead of fading softly away, the pigment stays in the skin for many many years, like a traditional tattoo.
When applied properly, Nano Brows results in a complementary color that slowly fades away, without drastic changes, making touchups very easy and fresh brows looking nature, and not "tattooed".
Nano Brows are the best option for those looking for the most natural-looking brows. Because there is no cutting of the skin, pre-numbing is not needed, and while I do apply topical numbing during the application, the majority of clients don’t feel any pain, and many even fall asleep and take a nap during the procedure.
I'm one of the only Board Certified Artists in the state of Florida who offers this advanced technique. I have many clients visit from out of state to have this style of brow applied.
Clients with an unflattering brow shape, or sparce brows can opt for Nano Hairstroke to provide a new or more complimentary brow shape while seamlessly blending with any existing natural hairs.
Many clients don’t have any natural brow hair due to age, over-plucking, chemotherapy treatments, alopecia, thyroid disease, chemotherapy treatments, and other medical conditions. Nano Hairstroke provides a multi-dimensional realistic brow look against the flat surface of the skin.
Many men wish to have a brow re-shape, symmetry correction, or a thicker looking brow. Nano Brows provides them the opportunity to change their natural brows without looking like they're wearing makeup.
The initial healing process is very simple and there is no down time. A cleanser, healing cream, and written instructions will be sent home with you to take care of your brows for the first 14 days. During this time, there should be no submerging (pool, hot tub, ocean, etc), avoid heavy sweating, and no other makeup or skincare products on the treatment area. A full 30 days is needed before full healing is complete and results can be determined.
Immediately following the application, it's not uncommon for brows to appear slightly red and darker than they'll be when they heal. It can take a couple days for minimal redness to subside, and it will take a full 30 days before the final color result can be seen. The pigment typically fades 30-50% during the healing process.
I let all of my clients know up front:
I am a conservative artist.
I can always go darker, thicker, wider, or longer. But I cannot take it back.
90% of the clients who come to me for correction from other artists do so because their brows are too dark. Too dark cannot be fixed.
The only way to remedy pigment that is too dark is removal.
